The detonation of the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinder along with friction between the moving mechanical parts of the engine produces heat which must be removed from the engine.
To cool down the engine, coolant, such as antifreeze or water, must be constantly cycled to absorb the heat and then also release the heat . The hot fluid is cooled inside the radiator by air passing through the radiator. The engine coolant is circulated by means of a water pump in your vehicle. The circulation of engine coolant allows for engine temperature regulation for optimal engine performance.
In most cases the water pump is driven by the engine drive belt. Located inside the pump is an impeller that forces the coolant through the engine. Seals and bearings along with the pump casting and the impeller make the water pump what it is. A water pump failure may result in significant engine damage.
There are several ways in which a water pump failure can be recognized:
- Coolant is leaking from the engine.
- A buzzing or whining noise when the engine is running.
- The engine is overheating.
